Whenever we drink soft drinks or while eating chocolates we might feel tooth sensitivity.
Do you know osmosis is the only reason for this tooth sensitivity?
How to get rid of tooth sensitivity ? Let’s get into this.
Usually, our tooth contains three major parts :
Outer part – Enamel which consists of minerals and is one of the strongest layers.
Middle part – Dentin which contains inner tubes with fluids and some minerals as a solute.
Inner part – Pulp which contains the nerves through which the tooth gets nutrients.
So whenever we drink a soft drink that contains a high amount of sugar settles on the enamel part. Due to its acidity, enamel gets eroded. And afterward whenever we eat food and if we don’t wash our teeth streptococcus bacteria will attack the food particles and release acid-like substances.
This causes the enamel to erode.
Before going into Osmosis which is taking part in the teeth let’s see an example.
If we take a container and place a semi-permeable membrane in the middle and if we pour water on one side we add less amount of solute (i.e. sugar or salt) and on another side if we add more concentration of solute (i.e. sugar or salt).
After some time, the water from the low concentration of solute travels to the higher concentration of solute through the semi-permeable membrane.
Do you know why it occurs?
It is due to maintain the equilibrium.
Water from a low concentration of solute moves to a higher concentration of solute. By this process, water can mitigate the higher concentration and the solute will normalize.
The same process is happening in our teeth. Whenever we drink a soft drink that contains a sugar content it settles on the enamel. The fluid which is already present in the dentine region travels to the enamel region. Because in dentine the solute is in less concentration but the sugar content in the enamel region is in higher concentration so the fluid travels from the dentine region to the enamel region.
By this process, the nerves in the pulp get affected. At that time we feel severe pain i.e. tooth sensitivity.
How to get rid of this tooth sensitivity ?
Try to avoid the intake of soft drinks that contain high amounts of sugar and acidity regulators.
If by any chance if you take soft drinks clean your tooth properly, this will prevent the enamel from getting eroded.
By taking these preventive measures we will definitely overcome tooth sensitivity.
