How do fishes sleep?

We humans wake up in the morning and do our daily activities and during the night time, we go to sleep. Do you think any day, fishes sleep at night? let’s get into this.

Generally, all the living organisms present in our earth need sleep because sleep is an essential activity for any living organism. For example, If we do any work, our body gets tired. To regain the energy we need a minimum of 7 to 8 hours of sleep.

In the same way, fishes do sleep at night. But it is hard to find.

We humans have eyelids! During sleep we close our eyelids and we fall into a deep sleep but the fish don’t have eyelids that’s why it is difficult to find whether the fish is active or in sleep mode. But there is a trick!

If the fish is in the same place without any movement it means the fish is in sleep and if we disturb the water the fish in sleep will react only after a few seconds that is the response time is delayed.

Some fishes sleep with slight body movement. It is because when fishes live in the river water, due to the flow of the river, fishes also flow towards the direction of the water. So fishes sleep with less body movement like the movement of fins so that it can go along the current of water.

An interesting fact about parrot fish – during their sleep they create a gel-like substance around their body to avoid any disturbance caused by other small fishes.
